What is the monthly cost of owning a horse in Central/Upstate NY?

sombradetai asked:

I am currently taking horseback riding lessons but seeing horses once a week is not enough for me! I love everything about horses…even taking care of them/cleaning up after them! My parents are convinced that owning a horse is SUPER expensive. When I know its costly but I dont think its as expensive as they think. I’d like to show them some factual print out to maybe change their minds.

    Hello,
I know how you feel. I have wanted a horse since i was 1 years old. I just got one. We had to work out the boarding, vet bills, farrier bills, his teeth, food, tack, and all the other things. My sister and i have to work a couple times a week to help pay for it all. It is very expensive. You have to go to a stable you think you are going to board the horse at and see how much it is. The farrier comes every 6 to 8 weeks to check and put shoes on him. It is hard to tell you all the payments now, because all places are different. The farrier will be about $100 and more, the boarding can cost around $300 to $550 or more. It depends on where you want him to be. The vet is different. The medicine cost and vet cost and be anything. You have to ask the place you are taking lessons at. You teacher will know everything. Trust me!! That is what i did. Your teacher might need your help around the stable and you could got the boarding cost down for working. I hope you find what you are looking for!!!

What you can do is contact some current horse owners through the classifieds, tell them you’d like to buy a horse some day and if they have a minute if they wouldn’t mind giving you a run down of their own costs with the horse so that you can care for it properly. You take notes with a pen and a pad of paper as you are talking and then tally it up with a calculator.

Sorry honey but it is very expensive, especially at a nice barn in NY. I’m sure you can find one around $250 but not much less, and I don’t know the barns up there. But an average good barn goes for $400-$800 a month. Good luck and I hope you convince your parents!!
