Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
Ok something happened today that in my 30 plus years owning horses has never happened…One of my horses COLIC!!! The vet just left and i have to keep an eye on him. He didn’t have the normal symptoms, he was bloated, rolled no more than normal, no kicking at or look of pain, some gut noise but it didn’t sound complete and he did not eat this morning, nor pooped. I knew something was off so i called in the professional.
My vet said i caught this in the very beginning before all the bad things that could have happened did, im just glad i spend too much time with the horses so i can catch this stuff.
So my question??? What brand of physillum (i do believe i spelled this wrong) do you use? I have been using Sand Clear.
We will be changing his diet slowly, he isn’t one of my rescues this is my horse i bought for myself. I just want to buy the best product out there, so price means nothing to me..
So what do you use?
Please keep your fingers crossed, say a little prayer for my Sisco…I hope all goes well with him i will not be sleeping tonight.
Thanks
C.C.
Look i spelled health wrong LOL
Thanks everyone about 10:30 pm he finally poo’d he almost got me, i think he was waiting till i was behind him.
Our area you could say is like desert, there is sand and we do know he sand colic. He looks good thankfully i have been down there every hour and no sleep, im dead tired right now. And i do not want to go through this ever again, scared the living crude out of me.
Thanks again everyone from me and Sisco. XOXO

So sorry to hear about Sisco. It sure is a scary experience.
You say you’ve been using Sand Clear so I’m assuming that means your horse lives on sand. Is there any way that you can ensure that his food is kept off the sand? Limiting his exposure to ingesting sand is probably the most important thing you can do.
Beyond that, I’ve had excellent results using probiotics to head off colic symptoms. I have a three-part blog series on that topic which you can access using the link below.
Sending positive, healing energy to you and Sisco.

Sorry for your colic episode. With equines on sand for the past 30 years and only one sand colic which the Morgan survived, I have to think wheat bran works. I feed 4 consecutive days of a cup of bran in the feed per month to keep sand out and so far so good.
For info on your specific area and your specific equine, listen to what your vet says as well.

I don’t have sand issues, so I’m no help there. I just want to say I’m sorry about the horse, and you are very, very lucky. My first experience with a bad colic ended with the euthanasia of the horse. And I did catch it quickly. Even the vet said that he didn’t look bad, but he didn’t respond to any of the drugs he was given and was in such bad pain that we put him down. He was 24. I hope your horse does better. Try to keep all of your horse’s feed off the sand (if you can.) Use rubber mats, feed troughs, or even put down a load of dirt in your feeding area.

CC,
Do you keep him on sand? If not then it’s not really sand colic you’re lookin’ at. I have for the past 35 out of my 40 years of owning horses, fed a hot bran mash twice a week made with red flakey wheat bran and hot water. I use 1/2 of a 3 lb coffee can of bran and then mix hot water enough so that it looks like oatmeal consistancy.
Now I had a mare in training that had had sand colic before I knew her and back then they had me mix 1/4 C of something then called Sterilax with each of the bran feedings and we NEVER had another issue with colic.
I was also told to give a horse a WHOLE paste wormer at the sign of colic by an old horsetrader buddy of mine. I thought she was INSANE, but it worked. I then found an article on line by Texas A&M to do the same. Who knew?

I don’t think the brand matters – it’s all the same. I’ll pray for you and Sisco but if you’ve owned horses for 30 years and just had your first case of colic – you are already blessed! Stay on top of him, he’ll be ok.
