laughing asked:
So I’m finally old enough to get a job, right? Well this means now I can get my own horse! YAY!
I’ve been wondering, what would be the basic cost of boarding? Just one horse, and i live in Arizona. I’ve researched it a bit but can’t find a set price. Anyone know? Or willing to make a guess? Maybe one of you horse owners could look it up and figure it out for me?
Any other tips for a first time owner would be great!
PS
I’m an experienced rider, 7 years under my belt. I ride both english and western and I’m looking for a nice horse that is trained under both. So don’t give me tips about riding or grooming and stuff, just owning tips. Thanks!

It all depends on the barn. My board is expensive but includes feed, turn out, shoeing, basic vet care, training rides, UNLIMITED lessons, and wayy more.

i’m paying $250/mo now because i have connections, but where I live (near Chicago) $400 is a REALLY good deal and the average is probably $550. It can go to $1000/mo in a rich neighborhood near us.

Maybe you should research this stuff yourself…you’ll gain more wisedom like that…..instead of asking a bunch of strangers…you need alot to learn before you get a horse.
Some things are worth waiting for

depends… if you go to a show/training barn. it’ll be anywhere from $350/month and higher.
search “arizona horse boarding” on google. i came up with a ton of lists.
so unless u wanna email me and tell me where you are (if you feel comfortable) i can re look up some near you

I have one mare and her portion of the monthly bills is about $300 if nothing goes wrong. Then extra for vet (4 times a yr routine visits about $250 -$400 each time) and the farrier ( $175 once a month providing she doesn’t kick the wall and loosen a shoe or step on a front shoe and spring it).

Try criagslist for your area thats how i found the boarder i am interested in

Well, you probably know that board varies with the different barns. I pay $220 a month at a small nice barn while I have friends that pay over $300 a month at a large hunter jumper barn. From what I’ve seen, most barns are around $200-$300 per month. But also extra services, will mean extra money, like if your horse needs special supplements or food.
Owning tip* Research your farriers, vets and dentists. You don’t want your horse to have sore feet or have to pay hundreds of dollars in medical bills because some stupid farrier trimmed your horses hooves waaayyy to short. And make your appointments early, not at the last minute.

Owning a horse is expensive. I live in the midwest and I pay 400 for full board which means I don’t have to do anything that I don’t want to do. She is fed twice a day hay and grain. She has turnout for about 6 hours a day in the summer and what ever the weather will allow in the winter. The stable manager holds her lead rope when the farrier shoes her, which means I don’t have to leave work for a farrier appointment,
In the winter the evening people put a blanker on her. I am not sure what they charge in Arizona. You will still have vet,and farrier bills plus any extra stuff that you buy

well what i learned from my first horse is that once you actually get a horse.. you realize how little you really know. yes you may have been riding for years so was i before i got my 1st horse.
and we pay 210 a month for the horses we have in stalls
and 150 for the horse that is on rough board
