I run track and I would like to start going horseback riding. I think it would be interesting, but how late is too late to start taking lessons? And do you have to have your own horse?
If you run track, you must have strong legs. That’s good in horseback riding, because you use them to hold on. No, you don’t need your own horse. Find a place near you that advertises lessons. There may be English lessons or Western lessons available. I’d try both to see which you prefer. Of course, if you live in cowboy land, maybe you want to ride the way most of your buddies ride. On the other hand, many places have mostly English. Both are cool in their own ways. I’ve ridden both, and like both. It’s never too late to learn. Remember to respect the horse…he’ll weigh about 1200 pounds. Don’t make sudden loud sounds or unexpected movements, and don’t sneak up behind him. Let him know you’re there. Horses are great, but they’re big, so be careful. Be honest with the teacher…if you’re a beginner, say so. Don’t be embarrassed…everybody starts sometime. If you have trouble finding a stable, check out 4-H in your area…they might be able to hook you up. Good luck!
it’s definately not hard.
spend some time with the horse, cause they can sense absolutely anything. so like, make sure you’re in a good mood and stuff.
then, when you’re ready, and you feel like you can do it. get on. [from the left side, id otn' know why, but when horses are broke, they're usually taught that the rider will get on from the left side]
then. ride. it’s really not that hard, just make sure yo’ure not allone.
at first, you might want to just get someone to lead you around, them walking in front of the horse holding the leadrope. but after you get a feel for it, then you can take the reins and ride’r.
i don’t think it’s ever too late to start takign lessons. it’s fun.
i’ve had horses pretty much all my life. never like, great young horses full of life or anything. mine are usually just my uncle’s old horses that he doesnt’ have time to ride, so he brings them out to our house. my horse’s name was Esther. and she was amazing. me and her had an amazing connnection buttttt, she got hit by lightning a few years ago. so that was sad. but we still have 2 horses. that are old. but they’re cute. so i love them.
