I should look around for anybody who wants help with their horse – quite a lot of people find that they don’t always have the time but don’t want to sell the horse. This happened to me and after a couple of years they gave me the horse outright.
Other than that look for someone who wants a sharer or try a loan horse

Why not try riding lessons first? It’d be much less expensive & it’d give you an idea of what type of horse or discipline you want to get into when you do have the money. Most horses are only cheap if they’ve had no training anyway which can be very dangerous for a new rider, so you could get the experince now & afford the horse right for you later.

If you have to work 3 jobs to buy & then keep a horse, you’re not going to have much time to do anything else with him. Plus it sounds like you might be young & what will happen when you go to college (which will be both expensive & time consuming!)?

I had to wait until I was 23 before I got my first horse, she cost $500 and came with tack and I live on 14 acres so she stays on my own property and it still costs me about $300 a year in food for the 2 I now have and another $150 in vet bills and $40 to trim (no shoes) every 3 months. If you are going to board realize you will need to have at least an hour each day to devote to the horse not including driving time.

well you really have to think about the care of the horse. i suggest visiting a stable for a day to see. its not about just riding , you have to get them shots, the feed, a place to keep it, hooves trimmed, buy brushes, buy the tack (bridle, halters, saddle blankets, saddle, be able to afford to pay a vet if something goes wrong, the horse its self. don’t buy a cheap horse something could be wrong with it already. take someone experienced with you or a vet. i could go on and on i have owned my own horses for 18 years, with help in the begining, Im me PLEASE

If I were you, I would look into leasing a horse first. In the midwest, it costs about $5000 a year to board your horse somewhere (and also includes vacc, trims, worming, etc). That is a lot of money to jump in to.

When I was in highschool, I could not afford a horse, but luckily I could keep her at my aunts and work/train my aunt’s horses to pay for board.

Now that I am in my 4th yr of college, I realize how much money actually got put into her. With being a full time student, I also work 30-40 hrs a week, mainly to pay for her. She costs more a month than I spend on myself.

You will have little to no social life and no money to go out and do things with friends.

the cost of the horse is the cheapest part of owning a horse. The supplies to clean and clean up after your horse, as well as the hay, are the most expensive parts.

Please, lease a horse first and see how much money goes into it. Also, have you taken any lessons or worked with horses (I mean weekly for at LEAST a year)? If you don’t have much experience and are working on your own, it is very easy to get hurt.

If you’re really motivated to get a horse try leasing one first. Your description sounds like you’ve got a pretty vauge idea of what owning one is like. I have four horses of my own and its excrutiatingly time consuming and costly. I love my horses but you really need to know what you’re getting yourself into. Try a dog for a while..

It can cost as much per year to keep a horse as the initial cost of the horse. Doing some of the work yourself will reduce the cost, but it is only fair to yourself to estimate at the high end so that you will be sure to have the money required to properly take care of your horse. Here is a breakdown of the yearly cost of keeping a horse.

    Horsekeeping Costs Per Horse

    FEED
    Hay (20 lb./day x 365 days = 7300 lb. or 3.65 tons x $120 per ton = $438.00
    Grain (4 lb./day x 365 days = 1460 # x .20/lb.) = 292.00

    BEDDING
    Bedding (1 bag/wk. X $5/bag) = $260.00

    VETERINARY SUPPLIES AND CARE
    Immunizations = $60.00
    Deworming 6 times per year x $10 = $60.00
Dental and Misc. Vet Maintenance = $100.00
    Farm call charges = $75.00

    FARRIER
    Shoeing 6 times at $80 = $480.00
    Trimming 3 times at $25 = $75.00

    TOTAL $1840.00

heya! i have got a horse and with me working allot i don’t have that much time to look after it. it depends where you live and what you have got. because say you lived on a farm you would hopefully be able to get the hay and straw out of the barns and the field for a paddock! if you don’t have a paddock or an easy access to food it could cost you alot. and remebrer the tack costing alot to. the saddle being over £500 (for a good one) and having the farrier in to do its feet! and worming and all of the vetinary checks. it will cost you a lot but it depends what you already have. but be aware it is time consuming and isnt a cheap pet like a hamster!

You really need to think about what you are getting yourself into. Horses can be quite expensive. Not only do you need to feed it everyday, but it also needs vaccinations, vet visits, horse shoes, and all kinds of other stuff. If you don’t have the land to keep it on you will have to pay boarding fees which can cost up to $500 a month. This is why I don’t have one of my own.
