You got it! They can move in and out and maneuver the vehicle better. Also I believe they are not as seriously hurt in a vehicle crash.
The same is true for a lot of fighter pilots….and for the same reason. They operate in such a tiny space that big guys can’t fit or be comfortable or perhaps as effective.
I don’t think a few dozen pounds in a race car (with hundreds of horsepower) or jet (with thousands of horsepower) is as significant as it is with a horse (with one horse power!).

My take on it:

Not all race car drivers are short, NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip is 6″5 and Dale Jr is 6″1. No advantage at all.
But like in Formula 1 racing, europeans are often not as tall as americans, but still there is no advantage.
