Thinking about getting a Miniature Horse?

laughing asked:

So I’ve always wanted a horse, basically for their companionship and silly antics, and I would love to ride, but I wouldn’t mind if the horse was just a companion.

I researched them a lot recently and would assume the feeding costs per month be $20-$30 (depending on their weight), and about $20 every other month for feet trimming, and about $40 every month for vet care. (Like covering shots, deworming, etc.) Is there anything else that I’m over-looking?

Also, I know that horses are herd animals and need to be with other horses, so should I get two? Or are there cheaper animals to care for that will provide the same companionship?

And one last thing, how big of a space do mini horses need? How do I figure out if my area is legal for owning horses in your backyard? I live in a horse community, but now suburbs are popping up so we have a medium-sized backyard, and down the street are like farms. So should it be okay? The only thing I’m concerned about is if they need more room me walking two miniature horses to the park to get exercise!

Any advice? Tips? Other expenses? How should I give them more exercise? Should I just take them to the park and look ridiculous?

Thanks!
