a friend of my aunt’s passed away over a year ago, and she left everything to her three cats in the will. the estate was sold off, and with the proceeds, the cats received memberships at a posh country club, where they now reside. in the will it specifically said that her two throughbred horses were not to be sold, and would be the property of the cats. however, the will is being disputed and the party wants the estate to sell the horses, stating that cats cannot legal own race horses. just want to know whether or not you think the cats should be allowed to have ownership of the horses.

I think it’s really selfish to leave EVERYTHING to a pet. What about animal or children’s charities? A trust to ensure they are taking care of? Sure, but what happens to the leftovers when the cats die?

No, I don’t think cats shouldn’t be allowed to own racehorses.

Cats are notorious for forgetting to feed their horses. They are also very bad riders. Seriously though, I don’t know what the law says about this, but as long as the human trustees are taking good care of the horses, it’s okay. The problem is, who is really going to make sure the horses are cared for properly, and what if the lawyers or whoever really manages the cats money are just taking advantage of it? There is a lot of potential for abuse.

The cat’s should sample the open market and see what the going market rate is on the horses. They should be picky about it too. Meet the potential buyer, sniff them, maybe get a tummy rub. Then they’ll know what the right decision is.

Well, the cats are not people and therefore cannot own property. If the horses were sold, likely they would become part of the cats’ estate and the money paid for them going into whatever fund is being used for the cats’ upkeep.

well… i think the rider should race the horses and use the winnings to take care of the cats… that might be a loop hole in cats owning the horses because they are getting the benefits of the horses…?
