Riding is for everyone- men and women alike. I think that maybe you asked this question because you aren’t aware of any men who ride or who compete and do well at the sport. Next time you watch TV, check out the Outdoor Life Network. They are famous for their coverage of the rodeo circuits in this country. Most of the riders competing in rodeo ( certainly all of the ones in the dangerous events like bronc riding) are all men. There are also many examples of men who ride and compete on and in the English side of the sport ( including in the Olympics and competitions like that) as well as men who are involved in horse racing. Right now, perhaps the best known of these is Barbaro’s trainer, Michael Matz. Michael is a two-time Olympic silver medalist in the sport of Show Jumping, and has won medals at numerous other competitions- some of which have been gold. He is relatively new to training racers- he just started doing that about 8 or 9 years ago. ( Of course, Michael is also known for another great feat- his incredible heroism following the crash of UAL’s Flight 232 in an Iowa cornfield in 1989, in which he unselfishly risked his life to save the lives of his fiance and 3 children who were trapped in the burning wreckage following the crash. Thanks to Michael, those kids walked away without a scratch- an amazing feat, when one considers that over 100 other people died that day, either during the crash or as a result of the fire that followed.) There are other examples of male riders who have done amazing things as well- and please, don’t ever let anyone tell you that riding is for sissies. That is definitely NOT true. Most jockeys are men- and so are most of the trainers in racing. On the flip side, in the performance horse industry ( those horses who do things other than race) the gender balance IS off- there are 7 to 10 women for every one man who competes and trains in that part of the business. There are many possible reasons for this, but no one ever seems to be able to explain it entirely. Some of our top male riders/trainers in that part of the business have complained repeatedly about the situation. Their worry is that there will be no men left to compete in situations like the Olympics and World Championships. It could happen- but not without a lot of other things happening too. So take heart, because you are NOT alone if you are a guy who rides.

No, but a lot of boys think that if other boys do it that it’s kind-of weird or somthing. Because in my class the guys are like “Why would you ride horses thats so ***.” I mean no it’s not that’s like saying sports are only for guys and not girls.

No way! If you take a look at the professional circuits, both English and Western there are a lot of men! In Western, men seem to be even more prevelant than women, at least in competition! At high level show jumping and eventing, there are a ton of men! Most jockeys are male as well.

So no, horseback riding is not just for girls! I think a lot of men are actually nervous or scared of horses, as they are bigger, stronger, and oftentimes smarter than they are! :-P They just won’t admit it!

NO OF COURSE NOT…..THATS SO SEXIST!!!!

  7. lala says:

    horseback

NO most jockeys are men, and pro eventers, show jumpers, dressage riders, barrel racing, and reining have equal if not more men

  8. Masquerade says:

    horseback

No, never! Though the majority of younger english riders are girls, some of the best riders in the world are men. Many jockeys are male! And who can forget cowboys.
In fact, the BEST rated showjumper in the world is a man, Rodrigo Pessoa. So go tell those boys some of this, and tell them to post trot without stirrups for five minutes. Then we’ll see what sport is ‘just’ for girls.

not true at all. most professional jockeys are men, and a lot of professional riders in other areas are men. look at the Olympics. men just think this way because they are secretly intimidated by horses. it is easier for a woman to get attached to a horse, and to connect. men have to majorly let their guard down to do this. any guy who says horseback riding is for girls is just afraid. and that’s what you should tell them!!

No, horseback riding is not just for girls. i have a lot of friends and family that are boys that own and ride horses. i think that those boys are just jelous of you and what you can do. horseback riding is a talent and you have it and they don’t. i am not trying to be mean or anything but it is true.

  12. lswalling says:

Have they ever read of famous polo players? All three Princes of England play polo and this is played while riding horses. What about our cowboys and their horses? What about our Native Americans and their horses? What about the Canadian Mounted Police and the Mounties in NYC and other states in the USA? What about the cavalries who fought the wars in the past? Weren’t they all men on horses? Horses and men have been inseparable from thousands of years ago.

  18. amazon says:

NO, that is ridiculous, what about all the cowboys and western movies.

  19. Fluffy says:

No, it isn’t. Just like everything else, a boy can do what a girl can do and vice versa. They’re just trying the be “manly” and not ride horses.
