Does this horse like me?

Emily asked:

I ride at Stony hill stables. The horse i’m riding is PayDay.I only rode him for two lessons so far but I am going be riding him for now on. My instructor said that “He seems to like you a lot.” When I got off PayDay,he was nudging his head lightley into my cheek and was nipping my shirt. Does that mean he likes me? He is also an intermediate to an advanced horse and i’m kinda still like a beginner. I just finished my first session which is 5 weeks and starting my next. I’m going to be riding PayDay that whole session. Someone said that people think they could ride PayDay but they can’t. I could I guess because I did ride him and did fine. My instuctor also said that because he seems to like me he is kinda gonna be like my horse, the horse I always ride. So,does this horse like me?

yah its possible!! and its probably bc of the way you ride. i rode this one horse (abby) that everyone hated bc she was bitchy. but i rode her and i did fine and she was fine! i loved her and i think she liked me. but my insturctor sed it was bc of my hands. i had very light hands and not yanking on the hroses mouth!! lol its very possible the horse likes you and probably bc of the way you ride. if u wanna make the horse like u a lot more, spend more time with him and bring him treats. if you have a better bond your horse will like, trust and respect you a lot more!!

The horse likes to use you as a scratchy/biting pole. You can get horses to like you by giving treats and affection, however this doesn’t build respect. A horse truly loves and respects you, when you become a leader worthy of their trust. This takes many hours of working with them but is completely worth it in the end.

first off you shouldnt give out the stables name, just for a precaution, secondly if the lady that instructs you says that he likes you then obv he does. shes seen him act with other people on him and off of him.

Of course she likes you! You’re letter her use you as a rubbing post and a treat to chew on! Does it get any better than that?

Pop her in the mouth if she tries to nip at you again, and push her away if she keeps pushing on you.

this is possible but someone cant tell by u just describing a horse, riding a a bond between two creatures and this bond can only be truly known by the rider and horse, if he likes you you’ll know

If you are serious about wanting to know, take an animal communication class. They are easy to go through and afforable.

its hard to tell if a horse likes you after 2 lessons…about them rubbing their head on you, my horse does that when his face itches. as for the nipping, usually nipping is not a good thing? but the fact that he did well for you even though youre a beginner shows he trusts you and you rode him well. it shows a lot about your riding skills! you must not have been harsh on him/ you didnt act like a beginner, so good job!

edit: i agree with mark c, dont let him do this. when my horse wants something he nudges me and he doesnt realize how hard he does it and it knocks me forward. its hard to say no because its cute, but its best for you and the horse. be the boss, he shouldnt be able to get away with this.

Riding one horse for a while when you are starting can be a good thing, since it gives you a chance to get to know the horse and how it reacts to your way of riding. Eventually, you will want to ride as many different horses as you can so that you can understand what things are common to all horses and what are individual to a specific horse.

Horses have many ways to show friendliness, though not all of them are safe. Remember, the horse is an animal who weighs at least a half a ton and has muscles to match. Sometimes it is clear that they do not entirely understand we are not as strong as they are – which is not a good thing, since the light nudge can turn into strong horseplay that can knock you down. So even though we can welcome the signs that a horse likes us, we have to be careful to require the horse to keep their behavior under control.

A little nudge can turn into a shove. A nip of the clothes can be a painful bite the next time. None of those “bad” actions are because the horse wants to hurt us – they are just like really strong babies who don’t know they are strong. So when they do these things, you need to push them back and let them know that it’s OK when you move them or when you want to groom them, but it’s not OK for them to move you or even to try to groom you. Later, when you have a lot more experience, you can make careful and informed choices as to the times when a horse can be allowed to show some physical affection for you, but not yet. For now, be happy if the horse comes to his gate when you arrive and if he behaves well for you. Those are the best kinds of affection to get from a horse.

Have fun, and may your relationship with horses last for the rest of your life.

It is possible that the horse really likes you better than other people. It could be just the way you look, but also the way you ride. I had a horse that only liked certain people, mostly women, but certain men.

My arabian mare does not like some people to ride her. If the person is not very experienced she will not listen to them at all.
