People usually just give a show name and a barn name. The show name is usually fancy and more than one word and barn names are usually simple. i.e. my horse's show name is "On the Spot" and we call him spot. Comanche could work for both the show name and the barn name.

Well a stable and plain name or the same thing but a show name is to make it fancier and more impressive. Like if you had a horse whos name was Bob, that wouldn't be very impressive and it doesn't catch anyones attention but if his show name was...say Bob's Merrylegs thats a much prettier more impressive name.

Show names are usually longer because they need to sound fancier and mmore unique then barn names. Like say there is a horse named Star but her show name is "Dazzling Night Sky" or something (I just thought of that off the top of my head). You wouldnt go say I'm going to ride Dazzling Night Sky now all the time would you? So thats why theres barn and show names.

<a href="**"></a>

Are you looking to register your horse who's barn name is Comanche? You'll need more than just a name picked out to register your horse in most breed associations. No two horses within the same breed association can have the same registered name. Most associations have rules regarding name selection and registration requirements.

If you named it Comanche you wouldnt HAVE to give it another showname unless there is another horse out there competing who's showname is Comanche. If people were allowed any show name then there would be lots of Comanche's and at shows people would get confused.

One name, just to use in your life with the horse---the other is a name for pedigree recording or "showing" a sophisticated name to appear in a show catalog. Originally this was done like an oral heritage or pedigree the name of the colt then the Dam and then the Sire, like Raven of Olivia Von Rumpelstiltskin.

<a href="**"></a>

Horses who are registered with an association usually have a registered name and a stable name. The registered name might indicate bloodlines or could have something in the name that indicates the ranch or breeder. It could be just a fancy made up name. I have a mare whose registered name is CM Zipponita. The CM are the initials of the breeder and the Zipponita refers to her bloodline. Zippo refers to Zippo Pine Bar and nita refers to Pepponita. These two are famous Quarter horses in her bloodline. We call her Princess. I have a Stallion whose name is Lil Tequila Wells. The Lil Tequila refers to his sire Little Tequila Lena. The Wells to his dam Wells Skipit. I include tequila in his offspring's names. Like Lil Tequila Mia and Peppy Tequila. But we call them Mitzi and Precious respectively. I can't help you with show names as I don't participate in disciplines that use Show Names.

<a href="**"></a>

Sometimes people come up with hair brained methods for naming horses, while others take a big swig of whiskey for inspiration.

This is the reason race horses come up with names like Sweet Bowling Rebel and Marry My Quickly (wtf)

My X track Mares stable name is Nibbles but her registered name was Tres Bay Moonlite (wtf). She got 'nibbles' because of some silly twitchy thing she'd do with her lip.

My first horse was L-Addin Rogue so we called him 'Aladdin'. My Dads horse was Welshmans Sunny Delight so we called him "sunny". It's easier to shorten the name to something that sounds less retarded.
